  1. If you are uncomfortable planning the trip yourself, and perhaps worried about language barriers or getting around to various sites, you can always do a tour.  For my first trip to France, I went with a tour group - I will go alone next time now that I am more familiar with the country and customs.

I went to Paris in April 2005 with a group called Ubiquity International.  They have trips to Spain.  Their trips are very good with excellent cultural specialists that really know their stuff!  The trip was fun, educational, and I got to see EVERYTHING that I had hoped to see.

  2. Madrid is neat, but I would not miss toledo. The shops are great, but don't miss a tour of the cathedral it's very unusual.

  3. You buy an airline ticket and go there.  What is there to plan?

  4. Invest in three things: an excellent travel guidebook, a compact phrase book, and a map.

The guidebook will give you an overview of places to visit, climate, culture, etc. You can also learn about how to travel between cities and within the city itself.

The phrase book will teach you basic phrases so you can communicate with the locals.

And the map helps you become physically familiar with the places you want to visit.

If you're in a budget, putting one together is also beneficial.  That way you don't find yourself in the middle of a strange country without any money. (Which shouldn't happen in a modern country like Spain where ATMs abound and Visa/MasterCard is accepted in most restaurants and shops).
