  1. I hit 3 wood consistently better than driver.  I give up a little distance, but it leaves a distance I'm still comfortable with.

  2. Practice, practice, practice. I've tried alot of things people tell me, and the only thing that works is to get out there with a few buckets of balls and get after it, as often as you can.

Good luck on your game man

  3. Quit trying to hit every drive as hard as you can.I became a much better and more consistent golfer when I learned this.Learn to hit every club with a half and 3/4 swing. You will become much more consistent with better control and your scores will improve dramatically.Professional golfers rarely hit a shot at 100%.It will drive your playing partners crazy if they often out drive you but you kick their butts by 10 strokes when the scores are added up.Play smart golf not maximum power golf.

  4. Cut down your swing and hip turn.  Hitting it more solidly on the face will get straighter longer results more consistently, stop trying to kill the ball.  Less is more.

  5. the margin of error for the lonest club, driver, is the smallest among all of your clubs in the bag. If you are fundamentally sound, you should be able to hit it straight. The drill I was taught is to hit a ball with driver only travelling 120 yards with your full swing motion. it means that you have to slow down your swing speed. If you are able to hit it straight in this manner consistently, you can start adding more power in the swing. If you are unable to hit it straight, you have to correct your swing motion. Don't believe those little tricks on teeing ball higher or else. For example, if you are not on the correct swing plane, you cannot swing a golf ball straight consistently.

The extra distance comes from the proper use of larger muscle of your body. Not everyone is Tiger Woods unfortunately, and you need to have good flexibility to hit it long. Hope this helps.

  6. A often neglected area is fitness.  Research shows with the right exercises you can increase driving distance and even short game consistency by gaining better control, improving mobility and strength and increasing torque.  Focus on the big muscle groups-glute, pects and core along with midback and hip mobility.

  7. Hit the range and find out if the driver is for you.  If not, stick with the 3-wood or hybrid until it becomes 'easy'.   The driver is a tough club to hit straight.  Most people I know who consistantly hit the fairway play a slice(fade) - its not pretty, but they find the fairway(at the expense of distance mind you).  Its pretty tough to ask for both accuracy and distance unless you are willing to practice A LOT.
