I postponed it the first time because I had classes, and this time its on my BIRTHDAY! The back of the jury summons is very nondescript about second-time postpones; it just says I need to do it before the day I'm supposed to be there, but it doesn't say if I need to do it in person, call, have a legitimate reason, etc. (The first time you didn't need to give a reason). I live in New York City.

I had to postpone mine twice. There should be a phone # on the summons and in California you can actually talk to a human being. Also check to see if there's a website where you can get another postponement. They were very cooperative and understanding.

Your birthday is not a reason.  Years ago while serving in the Bronx, the court issued an arrest warrant for a missing juror. Showed up on day two( this is when we sat for two weeks) Told the Judge is was her birthday and she had other plans.  Judge said no excuse and gave her a hefty fine for wasting the courts time.
