  1. you can practice on the floor.  i usually put a strip of tape on the floor that represents the middle of my board, lie down, i even "paddle" a few strokes, then place my hands on the floor a little more than shoulder width apart(or as wide as your board) and quickly pop-up.  try to do it in one fluid motion, from lying down to your feet, landing sideways, hitting the tape in the middle of your feet.  try not to use your knees in getting up at all.  it takes a lot of practice.  i only get to surf a few times a year so i usually do 20 pop-ups a day starting about 2 weeks before, working up to about 50/day.  also think about once you are up, keeping your eyes up, looking where you want to go, and your knees bent.  i always say "stay low, like j-lo"  i don't know, i just said it once and it helps me remember to not stand up too straight.  my boyfriend has surfed for 30+ years and that's how he taught me...hope it helps....HAVE FUN and GOOD LUCK!!!:)

  3. Unless you are an expert surfer, you don't really need to do much of a pop-up. As a beginner you can basically just stand up. You don't need to be able to do it quickly or anything unless you are surfing fast or high waves, which you definitely shouldn't do while learning anyway.

  4. just practice doing it on the floor..lie on your stomach and push ur self into a sideways position on your feet... you need strenth and speed really for this :)
