  1. Sorry, but I have to disagree with using any vegetable type oil to season your cutting board since in time the oil can become rancid and and you won't be pleased.  

    Mineral oil (cheap and readily available at your pharmacy) is a better choice.  Coat to saturation, and recoat as necessary after washing your board and never allow your board to sit in water.

    Walnut oil is an acceptable alternative, but because of the prevalence of nut allergies, mineral oil is a safer alternative. an occasional light resanding and reoiling will keep your cutting board attractive and usable for years.


  2. I assume you mean prep it for use in the kitchen? Give it a light sanding with XXXfine sand paper. Pour some good olive oil on it and rub it in. LEt it soak into the wood for an hour or so and wipe of the excess. Do both sides this way and you're all set to use it. Every once in a while, after cleaning the board, it is good to re-apply some olive oil again, lightly, just to keep the board oiled.
