How do I prepare Japanese maple seedlings for winter in zone 5?

I have three seedlings that are between 4" and 8" tall. They have been out on my deck all summer and have been doing very well. I know Japanese maples need a cold spell in the winter so I plan to leave them outside, but I don't know the best way to prepare them for it. I live in Chicago and our winters are unpredictable from year to year. Thank you!

  1. Sink the pots into the ground (the ground wil insulate the root balls and protect them from freezing through), preferably on the east side of your house, or anywhere that is protected from the prevailing winter winds.  Mulch with leaves.
