How do I prepare for a 7-day all- inclusive resort trip to Cancun, Mexico?

God's willing, in about 2 weeks, my parents and I are leaving New York City to take a little vacation (7-days) to Cancun, Mexico ( for the 1st time) . We are going to spend my mom's birthday down there. How do we prepare for this trip? How's the weather in Cancun? What type of foods is good to order and try? ( we do not want too much of a spicy food). How do we protect ourself from the "bad guys"? What should we be on the lookout for?

  1. About weather, check before you leave. You can just google "cancun weather". Right now, it has highs of 90 with lows of 75.

If you're planning on staying at the resort most of the time, I'd imagine that you won't get many chances to sample a lot of different types of food. At these resorts, choices are usually on the safer (blander) side. If you want to try something a little more interesting, go to Labna or La Habichuela in downtown Cancun. It is an easy cab ride away. Cancun is a 'free port', which means that there's a lot of duty free shops. La Isla and Plaza Caracol are the nicest shopping centers.

Cancun is generally a safe place, just general precautions should be enough. Have fun!

  2. Well your in luck- im leaving for mexico on the 23rd!! from NJ! Maybe we'll be on the same flight lol.. u leaving from newark> haha

Anyway i need alil more info.. you dont knwo where you r staying? that might be important... to know.. and what area of cancun are you going too... Im staying at moon palace... any palace resort is amazing tho.. food is great they keep it very americanized.. dont worry about too spicey of foods.. i mean bring pepto incase ne thing doesnt sit well with you but i wen tlast year and never needed it. Just becareful of the cab drivers they may try n rip you off... for the most part people are great in that area - u arent in the bad city area.. have fun!  Alot of resorts are inclusive however places like hilton and stuff liek that isnt... and some of the resorts on the strip are inclusive but dont offer alot of restaurants... im not sure if u already planned but u can go on applevacations.com and lookup cancun resorts and check out tripadvisor.com for peoples reviews of the hotels there... it really helped me pick places. Just look into where u stay.. there are def. better places than other... PALACE RESORTS are great tho... theres beach. sun. cancun, and moon.... closest to the strip.. moon being the one closest to the airport ... sun palace is 25 and older...

    goodluck

the weather is amazing btw..no worries there

  3. I go to Cancun very often I have never seen bad guys or had spicy foods.

My favorite food is Mexican.  I do not eat "chile" and I always have wonderful meals.  Not all the Mexican food is spicy.

There are hundreds of wonderful restaurants where you will enjoy local meals.

Don´t forget to swim with dolphins and go snorkeling near Isla Mujeres (Women Island, next to Cancun).  Also take your mom for her birthday to snorkel to the underground caves called Cenotes and visit the Xcaret Ecological Park.

So much fun, lots of things to do....

Have a wonderful trip and hope your mom will have a wonderful time there.

  4. It will be very hot.  You may want to begin extra hydration before you leave for your trip.  Only drink bottled water when you are there.  Request no ice in your drinks.  There are many different types of restaurants at each resort, so I dont think you have to worry too much about spicy food.  Try and stay in the hotel area.  If you can take a day excursion to Isla de Mujeres and Garafon.  You can snorkel and relax at Garafon.  Isla  de Mujeres is like a small flea market town, where you can barter with the storekeepers.  You may also like the Pirate dinner cruise.  Lock your valuables in hotel safe, dont dress too flashy, dont go on the beach at night.  The beach is where we heard most crimes occur.

Wow you have a laundry list of questions don't you?

Did you not do any research on Cancun before you booked this vacation?

The weather in Cancun this time of year is highs around 86 and lows around 72, mainly sunny, but with building clouds. As to the food, it's Mexican what more do you need to know, but you can also get typical American fare if you are in a resort, but why go to Mexico and not try the local food, it really is very good and not everything is spicey. I don't know where you live in the US, but trust me the "Bad Guys" are no worse in Cancun than anywhere in the US so just use some common sense and you will be fine.

    Enjoy the vacation.

  6. prepare yourself to drink just got back from an all inclusive trip to cancun stayed buzzed

  7. There's really not much to do to prepare, just be ready for an excellent vacaton in a warm tropical place. You do not need to be concerened about any bad people, just use your common sense and you'll be fine. As far as the food, at most AI resorts, they prepare the food to be mostly neutral in spice and flavor. Therefore, the only thing you really need to know is that even though the water is purified, there are still microrganisms that as northerners, we are not used to. Therefore, you should try to eat yogurt every day to help your digestive system stay regular. If you are concerened about your reaction to the rich foods and the water, there's something more you can do. I recommend you investigate a natural product that does the same thing for  your body that yogurt does, it's called Acidophilus. You can find it at most health food stores, it comes in pill form, and really does the trick for traveler's stomach. The final thing to look out for is when you book a tour, make sure that they offer a cancelation and rescheduling policy. Most of the travel agents at the resorts do not offer this option. Therefore, if you do a little homework and book your tours online before you travel, you can not only find these features but lower prices as well. I recommend you find Entertainment Plus or Cancun Valet and see what they offer, read the fine print and either get the tours now or later, whichever is more convenient for you.

Have fun planning your vacation in paradise,

  8. If you are staying in an all-inclusive resort, you don't have to do much, they have food for you (usually buffet-style) you never have to leave the safety of the resort, and you don;t even have to speak a word of Spanish to talk with people.

Watch out for anyone trying to sell things on the streets and on the beach...a lot of them are selling cheap knock offs (which can make great souvenirs, but don;t get ripped off thinking you are getting something you are not.)  And some of them will try to swindle you....I had some kids...probably 8-10 years old steal my camera as they were trying to "sell" me silver jewelry.

Weather should be nice...shorts, shirts/tank tops, swimwear should get you through most times.  But bring a light jacket and some pants in case it gets a little chilly at night.

Prepare to relax, enjoy the beach and the ocean, and eat and drink twice as much as you think you will.

    Cheers!
