I just moved here very recently for work. I used to live in a northern state. Any realistic and low cost suggestions would be nice.

  1. First of all where you live in relation to the ocean is critical.  Flooding and storm surge is the biggest killer in extreme hurricane conditions.  If you live near the coast and are in a warning area, evacuation is the only means to insure survival.  If you are in an area that is exposed to storm surge caused by storms you need to assemble an evacuation kit.  This would consist of critical items necessary if you have to evacuate such as ID papers, Birth Certificates, Insurance Policies etc.  It would include prescription medications and baby needs.  It would include whatever you and your loved ones would need to live away from your home for an extened period of time, including credit cards and money.

These things need to be assemble and placed in a single container to be easlily accessed and carried should you need to leave in a hurry.  Ususally in a back pack or two.  This type of emergency evacuation kit is the minimum.  If there is time (and there usually is with a hurricane) you will be able to take much more such as enough clothing etc for an extended stay.

If you live in a more inland area and are not at threat of the storm surge, you must decide if you would rather evacuate or stay in place.  The kit required to say in place is much more extensive.  Basically it will consist of everything your family and pets need to survive without any utilities or outside assistance for at least three to five days.  Food, bottled water, medicines, baby supplies, pet supplies etc.  Enough to keep everyone fed, clean etc without any city water, gas or electricity.
