Question:

How do I prepare rats to eat and how do they taste?

They are a delicacy in some countries so I would like to try it.

My area is overrun with them and I catch about two per week. It seems a pity to waste the meat with food getting more expensive now. I could skin them as well for the fur and make natural history exhibits out of the skeletons. They have been killed in a spring trap, not poison so they should be safe to eat after cooking

  1. you can't be serious.

  2. I don't know how you would cook rat, but I think they would probably taste like squirrel - very gamey.

Spit roasting might dry them out, so you should try a stew or cassarole. That way, even if you don't like the taste it will be masked by the sauce.

Do you know how to skin and gut animals? Because rats could be tricky if you are inexperienced.

  3. Yikes! I don't know if I'd do that...but to each his own. I don't know how to prepare, but I saw them being eaten on TV - and they were prepared much like you described...skinned & then roasted over a fire. Almost like a rotisserie chicken. Just make sure they don't have any diseases....

  4. go to any chinese restaurant,,,they can tell you in full details.

  5. gut and boil em with a bay leaf

  6. I think I just threw up.  lol.  Seriously, they are such dirty little scavengers I would not even attempt to eat them.  You would be eating what "they" eat.  I have heard that people do eat them but I think I would only eat them if I were really and seriously starving to death and there was NOTHING left on this planet to eat.

  7. Provided you don't eat them yourself, your cooked rats should be perfectly safe as far as you're concerned.

If your area is overrun with them, ten to one everyone else in it will have thought of the natural history idea too. You should  get together and do a group cook-up. Do you have a test victim in mind already or haven't you got to that stage yet?

Bye the bye, has anyone you know died of plague lately? It might be a good idea to check for symptoms before you start this experiment.

  8. Rats carry weils disease. Look it up - it's nasty. Dont touch em
