Question:

How do I prevent a stitch when running?

Every time I use the treadmill in the gym I get a really bad stitch in my right side just under my ribs after about ten minutes. I end up having to stop because it gets quite sore, even though I am still physically able to carry on as I am a regular gym goer and don't have this problem on any other machines. This is quite frustrating and I would like to know how to prevent it from happening? Thanks.

  1. I got those a lot when i ran in cross-country, but here's what i do now:

    1. Eat a Banana 2 hours before you run

    2. Dont gulp water hours before you run, drink it throughout the day..you should always be drinking plenty of water if your training also

    3. Lift your hands over your head if it occurs while you are running

    4. Make sure to stretch your side out before you run

    5. Eat light foods such as toast in the moring before your race, drink juice

  2. try stretching the muscles b4 and after u go on the threadmill

  3. don't eat a few hours before

don't guzzle down the water, this creates cramps

develop a breathing pattern, don't exhale to much also don't inhale too much since this will get you more worn out and light headed and can aid on a stitch.

also a quick way to relive a stitch is to stop running and touch your toes since this will put less pressure on your diaphragm

  4. Side stitches are one of many problems that runners get that will disappear once you have been accustomed to running for a certain amount of time or distance. The more you run, the less of a problem this will be. Also, make sure you are well hydrated before your run, but do not run immediately after drinking a large amount of water because this could exacerbate the problem.

I would also suggest running outside instead of on a treadmill, if possible. The monotony of running for extended periods of time without moving forward can often be discouraging, and even a mental setback like a lack of motivation can keep you from running at your full potential.

  5. i dunno about preventing it but if you push your fist into where the stitch is it should go away - you can carry on running whilst you do this

  6. You can prevent a stitch By breathing properly when you run.

But i do have a cure for stitch it sounds really weird but kiss your knee.

  7. One of the factors causing a stitch is rapid shallow breathing.  Make sure you are breathing deeply.  If you find you have "panting"  try taking some deep breaths.  You can learn to breath deeply all thru your run even when you are running with effort.

  8. Breath out deeply when your left foot strikes the ground.  Also, be hydrated and try to have a (mostly) empty stomach... IE, don't eat a pile of food and hit the treadmill.

  9. i have stitch too. i learnt not to eat before a run
