Question:

How do I prevent condensation from forming on the ceiling of our curling club ?? It drops to form bumps on ice

Our curling club has just one ice surface with two sheets side by side, and we enter the ice surface from the bar section which is usually fairly warm. We keep the ice cool enough, but basically when we have a bonspiel over a weekend, we have a problem with condensation on the ceiling. It especially happens when the sun beats down on the roof even if the temperature outside is nice and cool (-20Celcius) (peaked roof, black shingles) or when it’s exceptionally mild, but mostly the former. The Ice surface and bar area are separated by a wall with three large windows and a door to enter the ice surface. The space between the roof and the ceiling is empty and there is no division between the attic areas of the bar and ice surface areas (all one big open space).

Is there a best combination of Dehumidifiers/fans ? We want a fairly cheap solution, since it is a community club and not a business. Please make any/all suggestions so that our club can make the best of our few Bonspiels!

  1. Other than a cold room with a well insulated roof, I think the best solution is not in preventing condensation from forming but in controlling it once it does.  The ceiling should be shaped so that water droplets tend to follow a contour that leads them away from the playing surface and collect in containers or drained away.

  2. Get a dehumidifier, It should suck most of the moisture right out of the air, you will get less condensation
