How do I prevent people on the net from seeing my IP address?

or how do I prevent a website from knowing exactly what my IP address is? Also, I wouldn't want to buy any software or hardware to do that. Thanks =]

people can still get your ip but this just makes it harder for them to find it.

You can't. Your computer cannot communicate on a network without an IP address.

Your IP address is given to whatever your computer is talking to, so that the remote computer knows where to send the reply.

Why do you need to hide your IP address? All it's good for is contacting your computer on a logical computer network.

IP addresses cannot be used to determine your:

-> Address

-> Name

-> Phone number

-> Age

-> Bank account

-> Social security #

-> Credit card #

-> Dog's name

-> Shoe size

-> Favorite color

The only person who can find "where you live" knowing just your IP address is your Internet Service Provider. Only they know because they own the network equipment needed to find out. And the only way to find out is to find where you are physically connected to your ISP's internal network. Yes, that means physically following the wire running from the neighborhood network switch to your house.

For the most part people can't see your IP address and websites do record them but that is for purposes in case of fraud and abuse of their site. You could use a proxy website to alter your IP address for going to forums and whatnot but in terms of online banking and that sort of stuff NEVER use a proxy or other software to hide your IP.
