How do I prime a mechcanical boat fuel pump?

I am replacing a fuel pump on an 1988 volvo penta motor and need any tricks in priming it. It has no electrical parts its all mechanical. Thanks

  1. Don't worry about priming the pump.  once installed, pull the coil wire and crank the engine for say 15 seconds.  Reinstall the coil wire and try starting the Eng.  Rest the starter after 30 sec. of cranking..     It should start with in 2 min.  If not, put a little fuel directly in the carb.  a`squrt or two.


  2. You really do not need to prime the fuel pump,but if you want to the easiest way to do it it with a remote fuel line.Attach one end of the line to the fitting that goes out to the carb from the pump and put the other end in something to catch the fuel.

    Squeeze the primer bulb until you have fuel going into the container.Then hook your fuel line back up to the carb and you

    are done.Good luck.
