Question:

How do I pronounce my surname? It's Wietczak.?

I know that my Grandfather was from Poland, but I've never known how to properly pronounce my surname and have done so by phonetically pronouncing it (Weightsack). I would love to find out how to pronounce it properly. I have also been told that the letters should have accents or cedillas on some of them (similar to French). Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

  1. Names don't always follow the rules for pronunciation.  And many were simplified because they hard to understand and spell.

I like weightsack, though.  Makes me think of those old colorful flour sacks.

Try posting this in the language section, too.  You may run into someone familiar with Polish.

  2. Veetchak, but the "ee" is pronounced for a slightly shorter periof of time than in England. If you look on the web you can find a bunch of people named Wietczak, some of whom live in Poland - I'm sure if you emailed them they would be glad to talk to you on the phone and pronounce it for you.

  3. I think it is more like "white shack"

  4. 'Veetchak' - In Polish, W is like a English 'V', and C= English 'TS', BUT 'CZ' is the same as English 'Ch', as in 'Church'.
