How do I properly prepare for an Emergency?

With all the news about Earthquakes in China and Greece, I realized I might not be at all prepared for a disaster. What kinds of things would I need to sustain my family for a period of time if an emergency occurs? Obviously, some extra food, water and some supplies. But I am looking for a complete list on what I would/should need to do?

  1. Sit quietly , put you head between your legs and kiss you *** goodbye...lol

  2. Please calm down, Chicken Little.

Where do you live?  What disasters can, in probability, happen there?

There are commercial places that sell "survival" equipment, and plans, but I suggest you hone in on what might happen in your area.

I live on an island off the coast of VA.  Hurricanes can hit, but Nor'easters are very commion.  I have a duffel bag type thing with pancho, boots, insurance info, etc. in it.  If I ever have to evacuate ( I will never do that unless my pets can go too), all I have to do is add my purse (which looks like a small suitcase, and which contains my cell phone).

  3. If you've never been in a disaster zone then it's hard to comprehend the transition speed from present to destitude. It's immediate. You will need a supply of fundamental human needs in food and water and shelter. Most importantly you will need a means and plan for protecting your supply from the vultures who didn't plan. There are several good books on the subject.
