Question:

How do I properly wire a phone jack?

I have several phone jacks in my apartment & only 1 works. The phone company will charge me $125 bucks to get someone out here. I build computers for fun, so I think I can potentially handle doing this myself. A rep at my phone company stated that on the back of the jack, yellow & black wires are the grounds, green & red are the line. She also said I basically have to refer to the wiring of the working jack to determine which of the 12 unused wires needs to be connected to the red & green.

So I did this. But the working jack has about 3 or 4 splices on the wires right before they connect to the red & green wires. 1 of the splices utilizes a little circuit board. So I traced the splices back until I found the colors of the original wires. I then charted those & tried to fix one of the other jacks. But it doesn't work. I'd be happy to know what the deal is with the funky splicing job. But moreover, how do I get these jacks to work? (Please don't suggest wireless phone jacks, too much $)

  1. the rep that lied to you wanted you to s***w up.

The first phone number is on the green/red pair.

the second phone number if you have one is on the black/yellow pair.

never "ground" anything, you will induce hum on the line.

you can buy all you need to install your own jacks at home depot or radio shack.

to add a second jack, just parallel the new jack off the first, keep your colors straight or you will have cross talk, hum, and other really strange things happening.

you only need two wires for the phone to work, usually green/red or blue/white if you are wired with 3 pair wire.

the little circuit board is a polarity guard, it is there to make sure that no matter how you wire that pair, it is always correct.
