Question:

How do I protect my vinyl siding from my grill?

My balcony isn't very big, so I can only give my vinyl siding about 2 feet from the back of my grill. Is there a heat shield or something I can buy to make sure I don't melt the vinyl? Would I attach it to the wall or over the back of the grill?

  1. Well, the BEST solution would be to move the grill away from the house.  I know I've had to replace enough siding for folks who were careless about where they put their grills, hehehe.  Yes, I realize you say your balcony isnt very big.... is this really the only location you can put your grill?  Give some serious thought to rolling it out in the yard, or driveway when you want to use it.

If youve got vinyl siding, you've probably got vinyl soffet..... heat rises.... you're quite likely to melt the soffet, or start a fire.

Now... with all of that said, and not knowing just how much room you've got or the layout....

I'd advise against attaching anything to the grill itself, because it could make the grill top heavy, and likely to tilt over at the worst possible time.  At the same time... anything attached to the wall may not give you enough space to really do any good.  So I'd consider a free standing heat shield.  You might even make it 'surround' the grill, and offer more work space (really depends on how much room youve got to work with).

I'd make the heat shield with 2 walls... at least 1" apart, out of steel sheets, and steel tubing for the framework.  Put it on casters.  It might even be possible to run a fan and duct into the space between the 2 sheets of steel, and redirect the exhaust overhead so that it aims away from the roof overhang.  Kinda hard to say without seeing it.  The shield needs to be larger than your grill....wider and quite a bit taller.
