How do I put Music on iTunes on a Mac?

I have a MacBook and I don't know how to get music from a CD onto iTunes... I tried putting the CD in it but it just "spits it out" after a little bit... can you help me?

Go to Apple menu > System Preferences > CDs & DVDs > When you insert a music CD, choose Open iTunes from the drop down list.

Holding down the Option key might work when inserting a CD.
