Question:

How do I put a value on old coins and jewelry?

I have inherited lots and lots of old jewelry and some old coins and stamps, through auctions I go to. Where can I search online or what websites can I look at to check the value of some of these items. Some are for insurance purposes and some for selling purposes. My local shop is trying to rip me off and so I am thinking I have a few things of value because of this but I don't know for sure. I don't want to ebay it before knowing somewhat of a value. Thanks Everyone, if you need more info then please just ask. I will keep an eye on the answers. Again, Thanks

  1. You need to get a hold of a qualified antiques dealer (or someone who deals in what you have).  You might want to try an auction house (they have dealers).  If your shop is trying to rip you off then I suggest you go to another one.  The problem is that YOU are not qualified to set a price on anything so I don't know how you can be so sure your local shop is ripping you off.  Do you realize how much work and time you will need to spend listing all of your stuff on EBAY?  You would be better advised to find a reputable antiques dealer (or two) and sit down with them and find out the score.  And remember, the difference between insurance valuation and pricing for sale is enormous! Also, you may not have the haul you think you do. Try and find some experts in the field, otherwise you will end up chasing your tail.

  2. I would check eBay and check their completed items section. Then average out the selling prices and I think you'll find their resale value. Good luck.
