Looking to make it more eco-friendly since I can't fork out the money for a hybrid right now.

  1. Well, aside from selling it for parts (LOL), there are a couple of things you can do:

Increase your gas mileage - Keeping your tires properly inflated will help this.  So will getting it tuned up, performing regular maintenance, etc.  Also, take any heavy unnecessary cargo out of the vehicle.

Pre-plan your trips - Especially if you have a certain number of errands you know you have to run, take the shortest path possible.  I have heard that a good way to do this is to run your errands in clockwise order.  That way, you make only right turns, reducing the amount of time you spend idling waiting to turn left.  I have not tried this myself, but it sort of makes sense.

Some people say you can modify your engine to burn used cooking grease instead of petroleum.  I have also heard, however, that this is actually more polluting and is illegal in most places, so I'd rule it out.

  2. 1) Modify as a biodiesel engine

    2) Replace motor with electric drive + batteries (expensive, and range only useful for city driving)

    3) Scrap it and get a green car or a bike.

    YMMV
