How do I raise humidity for my ball python?

I have a 20 gallon long with Repti-Bark bedding. I have been misting it every few hours and that's worked, but for when I'll be gone for a day or more I need help keeping it above 50%. I have a humid hide with wet paper towel (can't find anyone who carries moss). I have a water bowl on the warm side. I have a mesh top, I think I should cover it partially, right? Thanks!

  1. 40 to 50% humidity is what you want (60% during sheds). Too high of humidity will run the risk of scale rot and respiretory infection.

Keep it where it's at, it's perfect.

  2. cover half to three quaters of the top of the cage (or wherever the enclosure is insulated) with either something solid or a damp sponge. Mist the cage with a spray bottle as often as neccasary or get a fogger. Don't leave the fogger on all day as it will get way to humid for most snakes, put it on for about 15 minutes a day.

  3. Put plastic wrap on top of the cage to keep in humidity. You are doing everything right; misting and keeping a water bowl in there. I don't know what else to tell you : (

  4. Hello,

You can try putting a layer of vermiculite which is available at Nursery's for plants underneath the Repti- Bark.

On the lid of the aquarium, which I am assuming is wire mesh, wrap one half of the lid with glad-wrap and tape the glad wrap down.

The glad-wrap helps the moisture to stop escaping!! And helps to retain the moisture in the Aquarium.

I use vermiculite for my tarantulas and this really helps with the humidity levels. Vermiculite is great at keeping moisture/ but not keeping everything soggy.

Everything else you are doing sounds great, your doing all the right things!

You can also try Cyprus Mulch, that is great for snakes and keeps excellent moisture- I had a boa that I kept on that and it was great with helping humidity levels.

Or you can invest in a mister, a machine that produces a fine mist of water that is on a timer- but that can be a bit pricey- but wanted to let you know such a thing exists :0)

Hope this helps, good luck!! ;)

  5. yes cover it partially. it helps keep the humidity frm being to low.
