How do I reassure my parents that online shopping is safe?

Question

Excluding ebay, how can I make my parents breathe easy when it comes to me wanting to buy stuff from online stores that are very secure? Some things I want online aren't available in the stores, but may be available in mainland stores (I live in Hawaii and our stock for clothes and things, say PacSun or Hot Topic, are different).

So, what do I do about my parents? Mainly my dad since he holds the credit card.

My advise to you is that you show your parents the webpage that you want to shop from with your cc that there is a ¨ViraSign¨, or some other sign that says that the site is encrypted and secure.  If there is no sign on the site, then it is not secure.

You want to make sure the website states, "Hacker Safe",and/or "VeriSign Secured" at the bottom. These websites have high security and are virtually hack-proof. Legitimate online-shopping websites include, but are not limited to:

Amazon.com

bamzu.com

buy.com

overstock.com

vehix.com

Take you Dad through the following on your next

purchase as he holds the credit card.

Firstlly make sure it has HTTPS when you go to secure

page......then you look for the yellow/gold padlock which

is at the top of page in IE7 and at the bottom in IE6.

Now click on the padlock and a dropdown box appears

with some info........at the bottom it says "view certificates"

Click on that and another box appears.....here click on

"certification path" and then you should see this....

"This certificate is ok" .....This should please him seeing

all of this and only takes about 20 seconds longer ...it will

also show the Verisigns and tell you its encrypted.

There is only one thing left now...you will need a larger wardrobe.
