How do I receive phone service if the only jacks in my house are CAT 5?

Question

I recently moved into a new house and have no phone jacks only CAT 5 jacks. How can I get phone service or internet service? Is there a way for me to just buy a converter to plug in my phone or can I change out one of the CAT 5 jacks to a phone jacks. I am fairly inept at anything technical.

I use cat5e to run phone/dsl from the network interface. . You need to go back to the network interface and see where it goes. The link below shows how to use cat5 for phone and computer networking.

you call the phone company and have them install new jacks.

If you do not have any telephone lines into your house, you need to call your local phone company and they will come out and install them for you.  If you do not have internet service into your house at present, you need to call your internet provider to come and run cable to your house.  Just because you have CAT 5 does not mean that you can get the service you want.  The providers must run their service to your house first.

trace out where this cat 5 wiring ends at...

you should be able to put an rj-11cord  (telephone line cord) into an RJ-45 (ethernet, or as you say cat 5) jack... (CAT5 is the type of wire, not the type of jack)

you can remove the RJ-45 jacks, and connect telephone jacks in there place, using the blue/white wire -> green and solid bule-> red.. if you need 2 lines wired then the orange/white ->yellow and solid orange->black..

if you were able to trace out where the lines go to, then you can connect your lines at that end... as ethernet cable was run, all of your jacks should be wired individually and to a common point somewhere,, you will have to connect each wire to your dial tone... while you can just splice them together by twisting and taping them, I prefer to use a jack with s***w on terminals to make splices, it reduces troubles in the future..
