How do I recondition a starter motor myself?

I have my Starter Motor from my 1994 Subaru Impreza EJ18 manual car.

I have taken it all apart and wiped clean all the dirt and grime.

What else needs to be checked and how do I do it?

What are the brushes?

yeah the brushes are little black square things.  make sure you replace the pinion gear and overrunning clutch.

The brushes are those black objects that ride on the armature.

You cannot rebuild a starter motor on your own unless you have the knowledge to do so. If you had the knowledge and the equipment to recondition your starter you would not need to ask this forum for help.

If you do not know what brushes are, take it to a reputable shop or trade it in for a new one at your local auto supply store.
