How do I reconfigure my cable modem to work on my laptop?

I have cable internet on my desktop and am currently trying to hook up wireless on my laptop. It worked fine at my last house, but now I am unable to connect to the internet at my new house. The problem is the internet works fine on my desktop, but when I plug the cable directly to my laptop it no longer works. After spending approx. 4 hours on the phone trying to resolve this problem I was told I needed to reset my laptop back to factory standards, which basically means deleting everything. I had a friend tell me that I might just need to reconfigure my laptop. Any suggestions would be wonderful. My laptop can hook up to other wireless connections, just not mine. Thanks...

  1. Okay your question is missing some information. Generally speaking a reconfiguation would be necessary. What type of cable modem do you have? Are you connecting an Ethernet cable to the laptop? Or do you have one of those routers where you can go wireless or cable or both? Your laptop should work.  Have you checked the WEP and network key designations? I have trouble sometimes myself. Email me if you want we can try and resolve it.

  2. you need to download the DRIVER for that laptop's ethernet modem, it is either corrupted or missing.
