I recently move and my computer is not picking up my new IP address at my new location. My internet provider tech support says my IP address is invalid and needs to be changed, but she doesn't know how apparently.

I have a lenovo R61 ThinkPad. Please anybody, have any clues?

  1. You can't change an IP address.

    It's your computers unique address.

You can only change your MAC address.

Plus since your probably been using your ISP on that computer before you moved your problem might be that it's trying to connect to the old IP.

  2. Open your control panel and double-click on "Network Connections".  Right click on "Local Area Connection" and select "Properties".  Scroll down and select "Internet Protocol TCP/IP" and click on the button labeled "Properties".  Make sure that "Obtain IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" are selected.  Click "OK" on the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties" dialog the click "OK" on the "Local Area Connection Properties" dialog.  After doing that, your computer should get a new IP address from you ISP.  You can check what your IP address is by goint Start->Run, typing "CMD", then typing "ipconfig".  You can also "ping" and address by typing "ping x*x.x*x.x*x.x*x" where the x's are the IP address of some known website.  Yahoo's is 206.190.60.37.  You can also type "ping yahoo.com" and it should give you the IP address for yahoo.com and check for packet loss.

  3. But it's your ISP that assigns your IP address.  Can they tell you what it's supposed to be set to?  (If not, you need a new ISP.)

I am going to assume that you are running Windows XP.  (Let me know if it's something else.)

To set your IP address, bring up the control panel, go to network connections, select the one you use to connect to the Internet, and select properties.  Under the list if things that can be set will be TCP/IP (or perhaps "TCP/IP v4").  Set the IP address, DNS, etc., according to your ISP's instructions.

  4. If you use XP:

clik start, point to connect to, and click show all

If vista: click on the bottom right by the computers and open networking and sharing center, on the left click manage network connections.

    ----------

then right click the adapter and click properties. Select internet protocol 4 and click properties. you edit it from there or you can make it automatic.

  5. A few things could be going on!

First make sure that your computer is configured to accept an automatic IP.  Righ click on the network tab on bottom right of the screen.  Click properties, and select "TCP/IP" and click to see properties.  Make sure the radio button "Automatically Obtain IP" is selected.  Click ok and close.

If that doesn't work, turn off your computer, your router and your modem.  Then first turn on the modem and wait for the ready light to be pretty much solid.  Then turn on the router, and wait for it be ready.  Then try turning on your computer and connecting to the internet.  This is called a power surge and is good to do whenever your having trouble!.

    Peace
