I am going to live in a dorm with cable, but obviously no sort of cable box. If I bought a DVR from Tivo or Comcast or something similar, would i be able to record tv? if not, what is the best alternative to recording tv?

  1. You would not be able to buy a dvr from Comcast, because it is integrated with a Comcast cable box. A Tivo would work, but that do charge a monthly fee ranging from around $8 to $13 a month depending on what contract you get.

Your other option would be to use a computer with a TV tuner card(like this one, but shop around- find an internal if you're not using a laptop http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as... ) and free software(yahoo will give you this: http://sites.mobile.yahoo.com/go/tv/get_... ) or windows media center. This way, your computer will become like a tivo.

If you're really into computers and are comfortable with linux, another option would be to built a myth tv box, but this could be very hard, http://www.mythtv.org/
