Question:

How do I record a lecture?

Hi, I have a learning disability and I have classroom accommodations which allow me to record lectures in college. Right now I'm a soon to be high school graduate, but I'm interested in purchasing equipment for next year.

My question is: what device do I use?

I was looking at tape recorders, but I don’t think they will pick up the sound from far away. It’s unrealistic to expect my professor to talk into anything, or even keep something near him/her while speaking. What can I get that will record sound from farther away?

  1. Have you asked the Special Education staff at your school for advice?  Most school districts have people who deal with assistive technology and may be able to answer your question.

You may also want to check with your college to see what has been done in the past.

Also, I don't think it's unrealistic to have a recording device close to your professor.  I have a small digital recorder that could probably be hung round someone's neck, or put close to them if they didn't move around a lot.

Please bear in mind that in some states it is not legal to record someone without their knowledge, so I hope you will discuss this with your professor, however you plan to do it.

It's great that you're thinking ahead!

there's got to be some good digital (not tape) recorders...
