How do I record from a digital cable box from an unaffiliated DVR?

I have had a Pioneer DVR for about a year and a half now. Until now I have had standard cable and was able to record fine. However we just got digital and a digital cable box. Now I can't figure out how to set my timed recording. To set the timer, I have to set the channel to record on in the DVR, however with the digital cable box, I can only view channels if my DVR is set to channel 3. So I have no way of setting what channel the cable box is set to from the DVR. So if I want to record channel 30, I set the DVR to record and it changes the channel to 30 and all I get is static. Do I have this set up wrong? I feel like there must be a way to do this. I hope that this wasn't completely confusing. Thanks!

  1. lol it was a little confusing but maybe this will help. if you go to best buy and get a box thats calle a xg323 then attache that to the digital box it will send a signal to the box to let it know that its ok to sent the information to your dvr. try it, if it does not take it back, but ask them before you do why it did not work, the can explain it with their equipment so that you can get it to work if its your error... good luck
