How do I record video on my computer?

Is there a FREE program or something out there where I can record what is playing on my computer? Like for recording videos or gameplay on PC games.

I already tried on Camstudio and Hypercam2, but I'm not too keen on them.

I think for a good screen recorder could be Total Screen Recorder I recommend.
