How do I recover data from an incorrectly finalized mini-DVD?

Question

While I was recording with my Sony Handycam one day, it got knocked out of my hand and hit the ground hard enough to knock the mini-DVD loose. It didn't get finalized before I opened the door, therefore, and it says there was no recovered information. I tried to finalize it as recommeded but now it gives me an error telling me that it was not finalized properly. Is there any way of recovering that data or should I give it up for lost?
