How do I recover lost files/pictures?

I had a virus-took the set to PC World where it was purchased-they got rid of the spyware'viruses -and also all my documents and treasured photographs. Is there any way they can be recovered. Apparently they told me that the PC is back as it was when i first bought it

I think you are out of luck trying to get them back, unless you want to spend some big money. There are people in TX that charge around $600 to recover files from any HDD, working or not.

If they have done that then you have lost everything. Take this as a learning experience to back everything off on a regular basis at least once a week. And especially if you are taking it in for repair in case they have to reinstall the OS.
