How do I reduce image KB size?

Question

I'm trying to make an animated icon and keep it under 40KB since that is the restriction size for avatar uploads on LJ. Currently there are 6 panels and I'm at 40.7KB.

Is there any way to get rid of that .7 without sacrificing one of the panels?

It's possible that shrinking the height and/or width by just a bit could get you under the limit. Another possibility to try would be to reduce the number of colors used.

either reduce the size of the image (height, width) or reduce the resolution/quality of it.
