How do I refinish a metal top table so it will still be safe for food preperation?

If it is a food safe surface (hey, gotta cover my butt, no?)...

I'm assuming that the problem is rust? Steel wool and mineral oil (food grade). Buff the oil into the metal w/ the steel wool, and wipe. Repeat until no more rust comes up.

If its not rust, you got me...

the only metal i can think of as being safe for food preparation is stainless steel...clean this with steel wool and an anti-bacterial soap...
