How do I relieve my 10 week old's congestion?

my 10 week old son has been very congested for the past week. He hasn't been running a temperature, but his nose has been very stuffy. It is alot worse at night, and he seems like he has alot of mucus in his throat. He has a cool mist humidifyer in his room for at night and I suction his nose and use saliene nose drops. He attends daycare, so he might have gotten the sniffles from there, or it could be something else. Is he allowed to have any type of decongestant? Please let me know what I should do. Thanks

  1. I just took my daughter to the Dr yesterday for the EXACT same thing!  She is 14 weeks and I was told there isn't much else to do for her.  He actually suggested using the suction a little less (it can sometimes makes things worse- that was news to me) and saline drops more.  He said he would not recommend any type of medicine for her because she was so young and didn't have a temp.  Good luck, if you find something that works, please let me know!

  2. you don't have to give your child medicine, unless your child's pediatrician gives the ok. What i did for my son when he got congested was run the shower, let the bathroom steam up for like 10-15 minutes. then go in and sit with him for 15-20 minutes. i did this a couple times a day. make sure you take some toys and a bulb thingy to suction out his nose. I did that for my son, and it cleared up his congestion. double check with your son's pediatrician first though. but I'm pretty sure it will be ok. i was told to do that by my son's pediatrician. it worked wonders. also you could use saline spray up each nostril. again ask the pediatrician first.

  3. I would not use a decongestant unless it is prescribed by a doctor.  OTC decongestants have been taking off the shelf for babies, they are only available for ages 2 and up.  I know my daughters pediatrician wouldn't even prescribe her anything because its not good for them.  Theres nothing really more that you can do that you aren't doing already.

  4. When they are that young, they shouldn't have anything other than the saline drops.  But check with your doctor to be sure.  Another thing you can do is prop up his mattress so his head is slightly raised.  You can stick something under the mattress to do this.  This seemed to help my son when he was congested.  Also, there is a baby strength VICS which seemed to help too.

  5. I ALWAYS GIVE MY SON WARM BATHS.  IT SEEMS TO HELP DRAIN HIS NOSE.  AND WE ALWAYS USE WARM HUMIDIFYER.  I PERSONALLY THINK THE WARM STEAM IS MORE SOOTHING THEN COLD.  AND THE SALIENE DROPS ARE A GREAT IDEA.  I HONESTLY DON'T KNOW IF BABIES ARE ALLOWED DECONGESTANT.  MY SON IS NOW 21 MONTHS AND I HAVE NEVER GIVEN IT TO HIM ALTHOUGH HE HAD HAD MANY COLDS.  (HES IN DAYCARE AS WELL)  I BELIEVE YOU SHOULD AVOID MEDICATIONS UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECCESSARY.  WISH THE BEST FOR YOUR BABY & YOU!!!

  6. add vicks to your humidifier, prop his mattress, bulb syring his nose after a warm bath before bed..if your humidifier doesn't have a place for vicks then they make the ones you can plug in an outlet.. the vicks is the best thing..my son is in daycare and it seems he has a runny nose every other week..also no decongestion or cough meds under the age of three!
