  5. I had a recent computer problem, and I kept getting popups to download Antivirus 2008, which is a SCAM. After trying many malware programs, I finally fixed my PC by downloading Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM). I hope this info works for you.

Here are the steps to follow. No. 1 is the easiest solution. If that doesn't work, go to 2, then 3, etc.

    1. Run quick scan with MBAM.

    2. Turn off system restore and then run quick scan. If no malware is detected, turn system restore back on and reboot computer.

    3. Turn off system restore. Run computer in safe mode and do a quick scan. If no malware is detected, turn system restore back on and reboot computer.

    4. Do all the c**p above, but use complete scan.

I found out last week that some of the most recommended AV programs (besides MBAM) are BitDefender, ClamAV, F-Prot, F-Secure, Avast, AVG, Kaspersky, McAfee, Symantec, and Trend Micro.

There is VERY GOOD info on the next 3 links.

  7. I recommend that you use Clamwin for this problem.

ClamWin is a Free Antivirus for Microsoft Windows

that uses the GNU General Public License by the Free Software

Foundation and is free (as in freedom) software.

There is a portable version of ClamWin where it can be install into an USB thumb drive. You install in a USB thumb drive as small as 64 MB.

First use another uninfected PC to download Clamwin portable anti-virus and install Clamwin portable on a USB thumb drive.

    How to configure ClamWin

    http://support.real-time.com/open-source...

Update the latest anti-virus definition files.

Set the preferences to delete or move virus to a quarantine folder.

Boot up in safe mode on the infected PC.

If possible, disable system restore on the infected PC.

Use the USB drive with Clamwin Anti-virus installed to scan the infected PC.

Scan memory and all hard drives for viruses.

ClamWin is a Free Antivirus for Microsoft Windows

Because it is free, the standard requirements for antivirus programs

would not be quite appropriate here. It doesn't have real-time

protection, so it can only be used as an on-demand scanner and doesn't

offer any real-time on access protection. However, this is where its

usability lies - as an additional layer of protection, it's very good.

With no real-time protection ClamWin won't conflict with any other

    Anti-Virus program.

Clamwin's programmers designed a unique scanning engine that no other

antivirus has so it increases the chances of malware getting detected.

The scanning engine scan everyfiles like it is searching for head lices with a tooth comb.

Most malwares are designed to attack popular antivirus products,

but since Clamwin is much less used, it's capable of fighting the viruses

    when industry leaders fail.
