I just got a new dog who is two years old, and has rear dewclaws. Can I tie them off with sutures, or do they have to be surgically removed? They are very loosely attached.

  1. I have never seen rear leg dew claws? Even so you'll have to take him to a vet to be removed

  2. Removing them means surgery and anesthesia.  Anytime a dog is under anesthesia its risky.  Unless there is a problem with them or one gets injured its best to leave them alone.  If the dog is anesthetized for another reason that would be the time to have them removed.

  3. You must bring her to a vet and get them surgically removed. Tying them off with sutures would just be inhumane.

  4. dont do that!

it has to be surgicallty removed

  5. usually they are removed when pups but they have to be don surgiricly by a vet you can not do this it will harm your dog ive seen this done on my pup and they cut it off and then it bleeds alot and they put something on it to stop the bleeding.. i think shes to old for this

  6. They are all loosely attached and yes they will have to be removed by a vet

  7. Surgery. This will be an complete amputation. Even though they are barely hanging there...he will need to be sedated and have them surgically removed.

  8. why do you want to remove them in the first place? are they posing a problem for the dog? catching on things? or do you just think it would look better or be easier to trim her nails?

and omg WHY would you think about doing it yourself if they have to be removed? it is a surgical procedure that has to be done by a VETERINARIAN  under anasthesia

if you have to have it done, I would have the vet do it while they are doing a spay/neuter
