I just bought this bike as a project & I've almost taken it all apart.

However, I am stuck now.

I cannot figure out how to get the stem off, I've take off all of the bolts.

I also cannot figure out how to get the fork of, but I know it has something to do with taking off the stem.

And finally, I can't figure out how to take off the crank, pedal set up, etc.

  1. This would be too much to type, but I can tell you you're going to have a tough time with that stem because of the rust.  The long vertical bolt that you removed from the stem is connected to a metal wedge inside of the steerer tube of the fork.....chances are that that wedge and/or the stem itself is rusted solid inside there.   First, check out the "repair help" section at http://www.parktool.com .  It has great photos and instructions (including the tools needed) for all of this.  You'll want to pay attention to the "quill stems" , "threaded headset" , and "one piece (Ashtabula)" cranks.  Use some good rust penetrant like Zoom or PB Blaster on the stem (from above and below) and hopefully you can get it out.  There's a good chance that you'll need to replace the headset for a few bucks, too (or at least the bearings in it).  Probably the same for the bottom bracket bearings and/or cups.   The rest of it should clean up with elbow grease.

Hope this helps some....if you need any more specific help post up and you'll get good answers here.  For now, though, that website is your best bet.   Have fun with the project!   :o)

  2. You have to remove the stem to get the forks out.

You have to remove the pedals from the crank, at least the left one then slide the crank through the frame after you pull the bearing out on the left side.  I use Liquid Wrench on the rusted pieces.

At lest you got the seat off, that is always a pain.  When you put it back together gut some grease on the pedals, stem and seat post.

The left pedal has left hand threads on it like on the big nut on the crank.

For the stem put the bolt back in and s***w it down, then back it out 2 or 3 turns and tap it back down with a hammer to knock the wedge loose.
