Question:

How do I remove my radiators to paint behind them?

My new house has beautiful radiators but they're very close to the wall, making it hard to reach behind them with a paintbrush.

I'd really like to make sure I paint behind them properly and the only real way to make sure I do that is by removing the radiators while I paint and then putting them back.

So basically I would like to know how I go about removing them to paint and then how I put them back.

They're steam radiators.

Thanks

  1. use a hotdog roller for painting behind radiators and toilets

  2. I agree with TEXAS... I call them WEENIE rollers, and I cannot imagine removal anyway.

They are sold, often already installed with a Roller handle, at about the suggested diameter (Hot Dog). You can purchase from an HD/Lowes/ Ace, etc, and get extra NAPS. You can find them in various substances from FOAM to acrylic fiberfill type, and you can look to see if the roller handle will accept a broom handle, or similar for a long reach, OR you can find them in a standard, or extended handle size.

    Just my two "sense"

  3. Good idea get a plumber to take them out and clean the insides of them and replace the valves at the same time.

  4. you dont!

go to the nearest dollar shop and buy cheap paintbrushes in medium and small sizes.

It is a paint - trust me I know - but you do NOT want to try to remove the rad.  Just paint around it.

  5. i would not remove

  6. in the paint section you can find a roller designed to fit behind the toilet...it has a handle about 24 inches long and a roller sleeve about 6 inch in length and about 1 inch in thickness....I'd try one before removing the radiators....because u would have to drain the system of all water first....and when u do reinstall them , you would have to bleed off all the air from the system

  7. It is a simple matter to loosen the nut on the pipe connecting to the radiator.  Do that and just pull the radiator out of the way.  Don't forget to connect it tight when you are done.

You will just need a big pipe wrench, with maybe an 18" handle on it.

It's better to get the radiator out of the way because usually the wall behind it is filty and covered with dog hair and lint.  You don't really want to paint over all this stuff.

People who say not to remove a radiator probably have never done it.  Takes about 30 seconds, tops.

  8. You should not remove the radiator.  Go to a paint store and buy a whizz roller (high density foam roller or comes in low nap) or use a Shurline painter's pad (looks like a small square pad with a hand held handle

( can use an extension pole that screws at the end of the handle)

Here is what they look like:
