I like Nature's Miracle because it doesn't have a perfumy smell, but it really works well.  However, it won't remove stains that you can see under a black light.  That's basically the only downside.

put some white vinegar in a spray bottle, and give a good spray to the spot on the carpet or the whole area if you must. Rent a steam cleaner and buy  with a special shampoo for pets shampoo the whole carpet, keep the windows open to air out the place and sprinkle baking soda on the carpet before vacuuming.

Pick up a bottle of some stuff called "Nature's Miracle".  It works really really well at both stains and smell.  Rent or use a steam cleaner if you have one already.  They sell pet specific washes for the steamers which are good.  Get a good blacklight and you will be able to see exactly where stains are so you can target them.
