How do I remove sealer from slate tiles?

We laid beautiful new slate tile on our fireplace wall - in browns, blueish greys, and rusts (called Gobi). Then we put "enhance and seal" sealer on before grouting (as suggested by the expert at the tile store) and the tiles turned very dark, and monotone boring brown. Why did this happen and how can we strip the sealer off?
