How do I remove snap fasteners from baby overalls?

There's one male part missing from a pair of baby overalls that I can't replace so I would like to remove all the snaps and replace them with buttons.

Any ideas how to take off the snap pieces?

  1. Leather supply stores like Tandy leather sell snaps and the tool to set them. You can remove the old snap by using a drill and the right size bit to drill the crimped center out.

  2. The only way to remove snaps that are inset in the fabric (as opposed to sewn on) is to cut them out.  You don't want to make holes in the baby overalls, so either leave that one snap open, sew a new snap into position next to it  - both male and female parts - or put a Velcro fasterner next to the missing snap.

Snaps create holes when they are inset, so even if you could remove the snaps you still would have the holes.
