Question:

How do I remove sun damage from my car?

I recently purchased a used car, it's in perfect condition except that on the left side of the hood of the car there's a very noticeable amount of sun damage (Texas weather). The car is red and the part that is sun damaged is turning white. I got really close to the damaged part of the hood and it seems to me that the paint underneath is in perfect condition, it's the glossy finish on top of the paint that seems to be turning that part of the car white. Is there any way that I can fix the problem myself? Are there any products that will help? Taking the car to any kind of auto repair shop is not an option.

  1. buy a buffer and buff that ***** out :)

  2. You may be able to get it out of there, you may not. You should have posted a picture. You want to get rubbing compound, at an auto parts store. Wash the area with car wash - NOT DISH OR LAUNDRY detergent - and then dry. After, apply rubbing compound to area and follow instructions on rubbing compound for removal. Rubbing compound is for removing stains, blemishes, and scratches, or blending them into the existing finish. After using r.c., apply high quality car wax according to instructions. There are other products besides rubbing compound that you could try, but you know, you simply don't know if they will work or not. "As Seen On TV" if you know what I mean. Don't get pissed if it doesn't come out. Your chances are 50/50 or less. I can't see it.

  3. buff it off with a good buffer and some t-cut...it may take a couple of goes to get it back up to the standard of the rest of the car but its defintatley cheaper than going to a auto shop!

  4. If the Sun has scorched through the paint then no amount of polishing will get it back to normal.

The only thing to do would be to have it re painted.
