I am replacing the entire axle because of a bad CV joint... can anyone help please? I have searched online and I can't even find an owners manual. Any help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks a million!

  1. To remove the axle you must remove the spindle. First remove the axle nut. This will be hard to remove because of it's size and torque. Once you have it loose, leave it on till you get the strut loose, outer tie rod off and the brake caliper. get some wire to hang the caliper up with. You don't want to stretch the brake hose. With the outer tie rod off, you can swing the spindle around either way to access the lower ball joint. This will have a cotter key in it. Remove the key and save it to match up for a new one. With the ball joint nut loose hit the side of the spindle where the ball joint goes through to dislodge it. Now fully remove the ball joint nut. It may be easier to remove the strut to get the spindle out. But if they come apart by lowering the spindle, remove the nut. If you are certain that your replacing the axle, you may hit the center of the axle while pulling on the spindle. With the spindle removed, you should be able to pry the axle out of the transmission. When installing the new one, make sure the splines are lined up before forcing the axle back into the transmission and spindle.

  3. This is not that hard of a job.  Jack up the car and support by the frame.  Remove the wheel and brake caliper.  Before taking off the caliper straighten the bent end of the nut out and loosen the nut or remove it.  I can not remember if i took the top joint or the lower ball joint loose.  Then had to pry and pull at the cv joint to get it to pop loose.  I did not loose any fluid.  The one i did was an auto.  I do not remember the year but autozone only had 28 spline shafts and the sephia i worked on (the last year) has 30 or 31 splines.  Had to go to someone that does foreign cars to get the right shaft.  south side of atlanta was williams import autoparts that were very helpful.  Took a little bit to pop the shaft back in and put together.  Make sure you tighten the nut at the hub tight.  If not at speck it will back off and ruin the hub assembly.  They should like others have stayed with a castle nut and pin but this way is cheaper and easier for production.  Look and you will find a kia site on line with lots of help from a forum wherepeople with these cars know a bit and may not have to get a book.  I think the shaft was about 80 bucks.
