How do I remove the radio in a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero?

I basically got it, but it was a pain. I couldn't figure out how to remove the shifter (automatic) so I had to basically pull things really hard to get the radio out and the new one in. It's not in perfectly though. GM has all these converters that are needed so it's a tight fit and the new radio didn't fit perfectly. How can I remove the shifter so that I can get a better handle on things and set everything in place better?

Where is the shifter?  if its in the column, put the key in acc and put it in neutral or easier spot for you.  You can do this even with the battery disconnected.
