How do I remove the win:virut virus from my computer?

I downloaded the client to a Maplestory private server, but it was infected with the win:virut virus. Random programs began to cease working. At first, it wasn't much of a big deal but many programs are not working anymore. How do I remove the win:virut virus from my computer and restore my programs to their original efficiency? I've tried scanning my computer, and every time I try to get rid of the virus the process bar freezes.

Update your anti-virus, remember to only have one anti-virus installed on your PC

Restart your PC in safe mode, and run a full scan with both.

While in safe mode, you may also want to have a look at your start up items by using msconfig.

You should also have a look at your IE Add-ons while in safe mode.

Disable any you do not use.

After you reboot back to normal mode, download and install ccleaner to fix any registry problems and clean up old temp files.

Use another PC to download Clamwin anti-virus and install Clamwin portable on a USB thumb drive.

Update the anti-virus definition files.

Set the preference to delete virus or move virus to a quarantine folder

Boot up in safe mode on infected PC

Disable system restore on your infected PC if possible

Use the USB drive with Clamwin Anti-virus installed to scan your infected PC.

First scan your USB thumb drive and memory for virus.

Later scan all your hard drives for viruses.
