Currently, I have lived in my house for about six years, which was built in the late eighties. I have this wallpaper up in my bedroom that I do not like! I would like to take it down safely, so it does not ruin the wall underneath. I plan on painting the walls green. How do I take it off?

  1. to get wallpaper off we did it the eeasy way we just sprayed 409 on there and then we just took it off. there is something in the 409 that will strip the wallpaper off .

  2. First check and see if it will dry strip.  Pull a corner of the paper and see if you can carefully pull it off.

If not, soak it off with a gel wallpaper remover.  The gel removers are not as messy as the liquid removers. For your safety, turn the electricity off to the room  and cover up the electrical outlets with duct tape to prevent the remover from wetting them and the wiring supply to them.

If the paper does not soak off easily, try perforating the paper with a wallpaper perforating tool ( Paper Tiger etc....) and then apply the gel remover.  Perforating will allow the remover to penetrate better.

If this doesn't work, you can rent a wallpaper steamer.  Steaming is slow but usually works. Wear eye protection and be careful of the steam itself, when using a steamer.  Don't hold the steam too long in one place - or it will soften the paint and blister it.

Once the paper is off, you will need to clean the glue off the wall using warm water and a rag and a little elbow grease. The power should be off to the room and the electrical outlets covered with duct tape to prevent the water from wetting the outlets or wiring which could result in an electrical shock to you or an electrical short. Change the water often as you clean.

You don't have total control over doing a clean removal job.  If the paper was installed over a flat paint or unsealed surface you will not get it off without some (or a lot of) damage to the underlying drywall.

  3. score it lightly and spray it with DIF you can buy it at lowes or home depot, it will peel right off, or you can try water and fabric softener mixture it will work as well

  4. You can go to any hardware store and purchase products to help remove the wallpaper. My mom used one in her bathroom once, I don't remember what it was called, but it was blue in the bottle and she bought it at home depot. It might help if you get the special razor they have and score the paper first so the spray can soak through easier. I have also heard of using a heat gun and scraping it off. The spray stuff seemed to work pretty well though
