The visa was issued at the Italian Embassy in Washington DC. I provided proof of financial means, health insurance, and "return ticket" at the time of issue of the visa. I did not apply for nor do I have a work permit/visa. My permisso has been "being processed" for almost a year. I am here with my partner and it is his job that brought us here. We will be here one more year.

  1. the best way is to go to the embassy in person and ask...

  2. If you are in Italy, you go to the nearest Police station (Questura) and ask for an extension.

Have you applied for a work permit? (Permesso di lavoro).

The multiple visa have a limit of stay, IE every time you enter you can not stay more than a certain time.

    eg. visa validity ONE YEAR

          Entries: MULTIPLE

Period  of stay each entry: can be 15 days or 30 days or 90 days each time you re-enter.  but I don't think you are allowed to stay more than 90 days continuous with the multiple schengen, you need a stay permit. Any way get information from your nearest QUESTURA. I'll check again in the office and give you more information.

D type visa is for work, studying or family reunion, any way to extend the permit you must ask the nearest QUESTURA, from your info you have got the 1 year visa because you are accompaning your partner, so both fo you can re-new the visa.
