How do I rent a place in Melbourne?

Question

Am from India and have enrolled for a course from the Cambridge colleg in Melbourne. Will be there with my husband for the July 2008 intake. I was thinking of taking up a rental Studio apartment in/around CBD or close to college. How easy will it be for me when I have still not found a job/do not have any previous rental references/am just starting out in Melbourne. Would it be a good idea for me to depend on the college homestay option for a few weeks? Am sooooo nervous? Will I be able to arrange for an apartment for myself before I come to australia?

I'm currently living in Melbourne, I've been here since I moved out at the age of 16.

Basically, if you don't have any rental references & no job, you're not going to get very far..

Although what I suggest you can do is, look at these sites.

These sites listed above are great to have a look at , under 'share accommodation'

It is fairly easy to post an ad, stating that you and your husband need a room for a while, and you can also search for ads, close to your uni so it is more convenient for you.

Then once you have moved in a share-house, start looking for work & then you can progress to renting your own house with your husband.

rental market pretty tight at the moment....

if your college has accomodation available...l would take that, and looking for something more to  your liking once your here.

There are properties available, but best to look before you commit as most have contracts for at least 12mths....

you might wish to rent privately
