Question:

How do I repaint a fibreglass kayak?

My son has found a kayak he'd like to buy, but it has nasty red and black stripes. He's not sure what is involved in changing the colours, and I am no help to him (he'll be 15 this week). Any suggestions? (Otherwise the kayak looks pretty good!)

Thanks!

  1. Car paints are your best bet.  Acrylic or poliurethane lacquers.  Some you use straight out of the can, others you mix with proper catalyst.  Most dry fast or instantly, so you can only spray them if you want to get a smooth, even finish.

The kayak's surface should be completely fine-sanded (120-220 grit) and thourougly cleaned of dust, grease and fingerprints before spraying it in a shaded, ventilated area. Read safety tips on the can.
